چکیده

Legislators, journalists, and researchers alike have recently directed a great deal of attention to the effects of cellular telephone (‘cell phone’) use on driver behavior and performance. This paper demonstrates how cognitive modeling can aid in understanding these effects by predicting the impact of cell-phone dialing in a naturalistic driving task. We developed models of four methods of cell-phone dialing and integrated these models with an existing driver model of steering and speed control. By running this integrated model, we generated a priori predictions for how each dialing method affects the accuracy of steering and speed control with respect to an accelerating and braking lead vehicle. The model predicted that the largest effects on driver performance arose for dialing methods with high visual demand rather than methods with long dialing times. We validated several of the model’s predictions with an empirical study in a fixed-based driving simulator.  2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Predicting the effects of in-car interface use on driver performance: an integrated model approach

While researchers have made great strides in evaluating and comparing user interfaces using computational models and frameworks, their work has focused almost exclusively on interfaces that serve as the only or primary task for the user. This paper presents an approach of evaluating and comparing interfaces that users interact with as secondary tasks while executing a more critical primary task...

An Investigation of the Safety Implications of Wireless Communications in Vehicle

The impact of cellular telephone use on driver performance was tested using an interactive driving simulator. While drivers followed a 15-mile route containing curves, obstacles and signs, they sent and received mobile calls and tuned a radio. Type of cellular telephone varied (i.e., manual dialing/ hand-held: memory dialing/hands-free; or voiceactivated/hand-held), as did cellular telephone mo...

The objective of this study was to investigate the effects of driver distraction – both cognitive and visual – on reaction time to unexpected road hazards. Participants operated a driving simulator while intermittently answering prerecorded questions of various difficulty (holding a “conversation” with the computer), or dialing specified numbers into a cellular telephone. Two road hazards were ...

Computational Modeling of Driver Distraction by Integrating Cognitive and Agent-based Traffic Simulation Models

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has reported that the major cause of vehicle crashes in the United States has been driver inattention and distraction. Among various types of distraction, cell-phone dialing and text messaging have been shown to significantly degrade driving performance. Existing studies have mainly focused on driver distraction scenarios with one or a few...
